Victor Crowley was a surprise film no one expected to be coming out. This due to director Adam Green going on record to say that he was done with the Hatchet film series. Thankfully for fans however he went against his word and put out of the best and most fun slashes of the last ten years.

This film takes place ten years after the events of Hatchet 3. Now I don’t want to spoil anything as this is a film full of surprises that you should go into without knowing much. I will say that Green, being a director with a extreme love of all things horror knew what to do and what not to do when bringing back his monster Crowley.

One thing that Green does as director and writer was bring comedy into horror. Now this is a very tricky thing to do as too much comedy and it loses the horror effect or if a joke falls it can also kill the horror aspect. Here the dialog is very witty at times with jokes and references to other films, past films of Green, and everything in between. The jokes hit hard and fast when needed but never feel like they take away from the gruesome horror or make it feel more comedy than horror.

Per usual Green also knows how to make a kill scene. Hatchet 4 may be his biggest and best yet. From creative close up kills to big shot kill scenes Victor Crowley is no stranger to killing in style. The pacing is done perfectly as to never go too long without a blood spraying kill scene.

Victor Crowley also sports one of the most well rounded casts in horror in quite some time. Each actor and actress gives their character a life of their own instead of making them come across as your generic horror stereotypes. For one thing as well, Laura Ortiz completely kills it in her role here and if she continues doing horror films after this we could have another scream queen to go up there with the likes of Danielle Harris.

I did attend the special Victor Crowley screening in Rosemont, IL that Adam Green was at during his road show tour of this film. He spoke before and after the film talking about his troubles in life, making films, Victor Crowley and such. He also did a Q&A with fans in attendance. After the movie screening Green staying to meet and sign stuff for every fan in the theater who wanted to meet him ( he stayed until around 2am I believe). Adam Green comes across as one of the most genuine, heart felt, kind and passionate people you could meet from the industry.

Overall Green completely blew himself out of the water with Victor Crowley (which is shocking since all his material he has made has been excellent). Being one of the most well rounded and fun slashers in years this is a simply a must see.

Score : 9.5/10
