A Friday night at the House Of Blues in Chicago, IL sparked out arrival of the now annual Metal Alliance tour featuring a cast of some of the biggest names in blackened thrash and death metal in the scene today. Headlined by the triumphant Behemoth supporting their new album “The Satanist” this sold out Chicago crowd was sure in for a treat.

Opening up the night was Black Crown Initiate who were the odd ball band of the night for sure. Black Crown Initiate seemed to have their music divided into three parts which were blackened death metal, melodic death metal, and progressive. The melodic moments featuring singing from their guitarist and vocalist which were surprising coming after the fast blast beat heavy moments they would have beforehand. Towards the end of the set especially however they had long progressive sessions where they seemed to jam almost taking cues from bands like Animals As Leader and Between The Buried And Me. During these parts the vocalist completely left the stage for it making it odd to watch from the crowd as the lead singer would walk off without saying much. They were okay to watch but didn’t set the tone for what was to come the rest of the night.

Up next were the two piece black metal band Inquisition. Even though Inquisition may have started as more of a thrash band their set was all black metal and continuously heavy. Faster moments of their set made the crowd start to move around and opening a pit while their slower slows brought along a unison of headbanging through the venue. Front man Dagon walked around the stage utilizing the several microphones he had set up to showcase his unique vocal talents which went from almost a frog  like sound, to sounding more robotic, to finally finishing with some deep growls bringing their set to a close. Inquisition showed why they’ve been in the scene for more than 20 years and why they aren’t leaving anytime soon.

Norway’s 1349 were next and continued on with the black metal. Front man Ravn stood front and center with a devastating fast vocal command taking the crowd by control while drummer Frost pounded away on the drums making the crowd move. 1349 played a good set consisting of a at least 1-2 songs from most albums of their.

Goatwhore was finally up though as direct support and showed why they are one of the frontrunners for blackened thrash metal. Right away the energy and movement from the crowd commanded the crowd into a nonstop frenzy for the duration of their set. Vocalist Falgoust tore the stage up during their set clearing having a great time while lead guitarist and back up vocalist Sammy Duet shred away making you just stop and stare at his skills. Playing a set mostly containing songs from their last album “Blood For The Master” Goatwhore did give the crowd a new song from their upcoming album before closing with their big hit “Apocalyptic Havoc” which had the crowd singing along and giving Goatwhore their last circle pit of the set. Goatwhore reaffirmed that they are here to stay and will continue to dominate this year with a new album and playing on the “Summer Slaughter” tour this summer.

Headlining however are Poland’s blackened death metal gods Behemoth. Making their return tour supporting their latest album “The Satanist” Behemoth tore up the House Of Blues for a solid hour and 15 minute set. Front man Nergal is more energetic, powerful, and full of emotion than ever even after his health issues he faced a few years ago. If anything those problems have only made his live playing and spirit so much more intense. Nergal was going around the stage commanding the crowd, cheering them, making them chant all while slamming his guitar around and nailing every vocal spot he had. Inferno on drums was tearing apart his monstrous kit sitting upon a huge drum riser. Behemoth gave everyone a fair set of songs with a fair dose off the newest album and some more off of their older albums.

Overall Metal Alliance showed that blackened death metal could sell out a large venue and provide a excellent show. Now to just see what the theme for next years tour is and who they bring with them.
