Since I don’t think another stunt based Jackass film could happen the team behind it have now presented us with Bad Grandpa, a hidden camera posed film in the vein of Borat and Bruno. Sadly unlike the Jackass films themselves this one doesn’t always hit the mark.
We follow Irving Zisman the 86 year old grandpa on his cross country pursuit to give him grandson Billy to his deadbeat father while his mother does another jail stint for drug abuse. Through the trip though they get themselves into situations that are always over the top and extreme. That is too be expected though being a film branding the Jackass name. What they did try to attempt though is adding in a story. Mainly they feel like a filler however. You never get engrossed in the story because it doesn’t matter. At times they even try adding emotional moments in it which do work but again it just feels like so much the scripted parts are filler. They also tend to kill the moment too as you will go from laughing to a somewhat boring scene that drags before leading back into another humorous scene.
Johnny Knoxville and Jackson Nicoll carry the film though as Irving and his grandson Billy. The things they say are brilliant especially in Jackson’s case as Billy. Also you have to take into account the nerves of steel they must have had for some of the scenes. In the scenes that they work together too their chemistry is so natural that most would never think twice about what is happening. It should also be noted that the funniest scenes are not the ones shown in the trailers for once. I didn’t care for the fact though that what is shown in the trailer is almost the full scenes anyway. It was also a nice thing to see in the credit scene that they showed the reaction tapes of when they were done filming and announced what had happened.
Overall Bad Grandpa is one of the funnier times you’ll have watching a movie right now. With some great laughs to go along with a forced and somewhat boring scripted story it’s worth a viewing even if you aren’t a fan of the previous Jackass work. Now one must just wonder if more Jackass Presents films will be on their way.
