Genre : Horror
Story (from IMDB): The haunted Lambert family seeks to uncover the mysterious childhood secret that has left them dangerously connected to the spirit world.
The first Insidious was a good horror movie I thought that drew from older horror films and relied more on tension rather than non stop jump scares and gore but sadly let me down somewhat in the end. Thankfully though director James Wan has learned from his other big release of the year “The Conjuring” on how to make a good horror movie.
I do plan on making this as spoiler free as possible because how the story unfolds is actually pretty great. The movie does a great job of not only recapping and continuing from the end of the first film but even goes as far to provide a explanation and showing of what happened between the films. For anyone that did not know the first film followed the Lambert family who’s son had a ability that let him go into the “The Further” which made it where he could leave his body and go into basically another world. They then battled through hells and everything to get him back. We pick up from the shocker ending of the first film to show the Lamberts moving into a new home trying to start over away from hauntings and The Further. Unfortunately not everything goes well and the Lamberts are put back into a haunting situation with The Further for a second time.
Another thing the film does well is explaining things in detail and going back and showing how and why something happened. If a door opens in one scene, later on the movie will go back and show why the door was open and what was on the other side. There may be a event that happened in the first film and the second film will explain what all happened to show its importance. Insidious Chapter 2 also shows a great amount of detail into it’s “ghosts” giving a few entire detailed back stories with flashbacks included. The amount of detail and explanation that is given for The Further as well is great. A world that was made just for this film and it gets some great explanations of what it is and what it is capable of doing and having in it.
Just like the first film and The Conjuring James Wan knows how to set a scene. There is the occasional jump scare but it’s done right. Most of the time it’s just a bump or a flicker of something to start. Some loud music then plays while a scene starts to build tension. You get the feeling something is there about to happen and if it does or doesn’t it always works. It also helps that there still isn’t any CGI in the film at all and everything is hand done. It was also nice to see some throwbacks to the set pieces from The Conjuring that make it’s way into this film.
Cast wise the movie does a great job. Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne play Josh and Renai Lambert and do a great job. Patrick Wilson is great at being calm in one scene to only all over the place the next. Rose Byrne does a good job at helping build the suspense scenes by making her worry really show like she is expecting something to happen. Ty Simpkins plays the child Dalton who is still having trouble with his power to go to The Further and having to see horrible things that no one should have to see. Lin Shaye is phenomenal though as the paranormal investigator Elise Rainer.
Overall Insidious Chapter Two is a big step up from the first one and a really enjoyable horror film. I really have to recommend it and hope that down the line we get Chapter 3.
