Another new series for Batman comics to start with this time dealing with a much darker and more violent Gotham this time.
Taken from Bruce Wayne’s eye we get to see the dark ruins of Gotham and the effort of one man on a mission to restore what he believes can be a great city. While most of the issue revolves around Bruce making the statement of how “Gotham is…” various things and how just because one person describes Gotham in a bad light doesn’t mean that what everyone thinks it is or can be. We see Bruce take another party under him with the agenda being more ways to improve Gotham as a city.
The opening section of the issue is a great opener while not only showing some well renown villains in the Batman universe but also showing the technology that Bruce Wayne has been able to make at the moment. You also get a brief panel showing with the likes of Robin, Nightwing, and Red Robin.
What really makes this a great kickoff though is the ending which focuses on the beginning of a grisly murder scene where Batman shows off his keen and high tech detective skills with a cliffhanger that shows that this series will carry on to be a full expansive story line. It also helps that the general look of the Batman times are dark and gritty with a rather graphic murder that really puts you into the environment of the Gotham that Bruce wants to take away. The gritty Gotham that people know and love is here at full display.
Overall this sets the opener to what will be a great memorable series for Batman. Setting the tone of a dark and gritty story that will surely throw some twists our way this a highly recommended reading for any Batman fan.
