Another Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie that will be very short lived in theaters based to the very low reception it seems to have been receiving. Now from one point I can see and truly understand why some people may not like it but if you are a fan of the series at all I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised with this.
The story opens with showing scenes from original Texas Chainsaw Massacre then going straight into a flashback that will start off the story for this movie. The flashback scene is okay but with the characters in it for the family don’t feel right. The only thing I felt was good about it was the fact that it set up what would become some of the main story. The modern day part has a slow build to it but that is mainly due to luck of interesting main characters. Once the story starts to go deeper and the twists start happening the story itself isn’t that bad. The movie acts as a direct sequel to the original Texas Chainsaw Masscare almost as if Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 never happened. It can be confusing to explain and with all the movies in the series now the order can odd but I think throughout the movie it explains itself enough where you won’t be confused.
One of the main draw backs though is the characters that we have to deal with. None of them including the main character are memorable or for the most part even likeable. Alexandra Daddario as Heather (the main character) is a horrible character. She easily overlooks too many situations that if done could have caused many of the situations to not happen. I will blame it on some of the horrible writing from the script but she has some terrible gut wrenching lines too as do many of the other characters. Trey Songz and Tania Raymonde play “Heather’s” two friends who get the most screen time. Tania’s character plays the average female in a horror movie whos main role is sex while Trey Songz play’s “Heather’s” cheating self absorbed boyfriend. Both do nothing to add to the film.
Leatherface at least is done with justice. They give him some good back story and for the most part keep him like he was in the original. He still doesn’t run really as its almost just a fast limp. He still has the same kills he always has and they still do the part. I do feel like I should address the entire 3D aspect of the movie though. For 98% of the movie it doesn’t feel 3D. There are a few scenes where the chainsaw will rip threw the middle of the screen and come out but all that ended up doing was almost making me go cross eyed giving me a headache. So the 3D part does nothing for the movie.
Overall if you like the series then odds are even with the faults you will still enjoy this. I’d say they could make another good sequel based off this story but with how badly this movie has been doing I don’t see that happening at least not for a while. Still though it is worth the watch.
