Silent Night (2012) Movie Review

Genre : Horror
Story (from IMDB) :
The police force of a remote Midwestern town search for a killer Santa Claus who is picking off citizens on Christmas Eve.
People need to stop saying this is a remake because other than a few small references it has nothing to do with “Silent Night Deadly Night”. As it’s own movie though it isn’t that bad and is one of the best straight to DVD horror movies I’ve seen in a long time.
On paper this movie doesn’t really have much going for it. The story itself is rather bland, uninspired, and almost nonexistent. Nothing is explained in too much of detail and instead all you get is almost a fairy tale put into action. It really boils down to watching someone in a Santa outfit going around and killing those who are “naughty”. You do get a small twist where without giving it away you learn a small part about the still unknown “Santa” but unless you are paying great attention to detail the odds of missing that are extremely high.
Your characters are all bland, easily forgettable, and pretty unlikeable. Malcolm McDowell as the lead sheriff of the town gives a extremely over done role. I think he almost went to try and over read his lines too much because he takes what would be a normal role and makes it a serious scene almost, that is until he starts spewing some horribly corny one liners. Jaime King plays your lead female role reaching into the deepest parts of being a useless lead female in a horror movie. Does she scream and cry constantly, yes. Yet somehow by the end she musters up the courage to fight even though during the movie she doesn’t even know if she wants to be a cop because shes not made for it. Really those two are the only characters that I remember, neither of which I remembered for their positive traits.
The one thing the movie has going for it is a fun factor almost. It’s enjoyable to watch this Santa go around and kill everyone. Partially because the kills are so violent and over the top. They hit their good mark at least with the kills in this movie. If you were looking for a really good horror movie then this might not be what you want. If you would like a fun movie where you don’t have to think but still get to see Santa kills hookers among others than this is your movie. Worth a view for sure.
