The Watch (2012) Movie Review

Genre : Comedy
Story (from IMDB) :
Suburban dads who form a neighborhood watch group as a way to get out of their day-to-day family routines find themselves defending the Earth from an alien invasion.
Well this turned out to be a surprising movie in the fact of I didn’t think it would really be funny and it turned out to be pretty good.
The story follows a group of citizens who form after the murder of Ben Stiller’s characters friend. What they end up doing is fighting against a alien race. It seemed though at times this movie forgot what genre it was. You have comedy, horror, sci fi, action, and some mild romance in this. I still consider it a comedy since it maintains that part the most. Now the comedy is your average foul mouth raunchy jokes that would fit into a Seth Rogan film perfectly yet in this movie they were still funny. You will be laughing during this film but nothing will make you burst out laughing. None of the jokes here are too new or anything,
Now you have Ben Stiller playing his normal role of normal man called into action and Vince Vaughan pretty much playing the average role of family guy who needs friends. Jonah Hill is pretty funny in this movie playing a angry high school dropout / police regret. Too bad they didn’t give him too many standout lines. Richard Ayoade is also pretty funny in this film but just like Jonah Hill they really don’t give him enough time to truly shine. Also this film pretty much neglects any backstory to anyone but Stiller who even then they give him very little which turns into a small average romance cliche. It does nothing for the film and it seemed like no one in the theater cared about it at all. One standout role is Will Forte who plays a oddball cop who moments where he is on screen are generally funny.
In a film where the cast isn’t utilized and where they switch genre’s it is surprising funny and entertaining enough to warrent a view. It will keep you laughing and entertained but just wishing they made some changes to it.
