Trapped inside her family’s lakeside retreat, a young woman finds she is unable to contact the outside world as events become increasingly ominous in and around the house.
Well this film turned out pretty much how I expected it to. I mean that as not only did I guess the story but I also guessed it would be horrible, and horrible it was.
Now this film was being hyped as being a horror movie where the entire is shot in one take. Now if done correctly I could see that being great for a horror film, not in this case though. The fault for this is that it is boring. The film has a really slow pace for it even when something is happening so you end up getting dragged along with it. The film has a slow pick up to it and with it being a “one take” film it has a hard time getting you interested and involved in caring about it. Also it is quite clear how they cut the film together to make it seem like one cut. Every now and then it will get black and you can tell that is when they would splice it together. I also noticed a good amount of times where the camera would turn and blood stains on the character would disappear or switch sides. With things that like occurring it takes you out of it being a one shot film.
Also the story line in this is ridiculous. I don’t mean that by how they play it out but towards the end they take away any horror elements and turn it into a bad thriller almost. I don’t know what they were thinking when they played out the story for this one but it’s horrible. It almost makes the entire movie feel like it was one big waste to watch. I will say about 15 minutes in I did call what it would be though as let’s just say, it’s been done a million and ten times already.
Really the only saving grace of this movie is Elizabeth Olsen’s performance. I think for the fact that most of the film is just her that she can play her role well enough to keep you entertained with just her. I look forward to seeing what things she does in the future but she really is the saving point of a film with a small cast and nothing good backing it.
Overall there is no reason to watch this film. There are thousands of better horror films you can watch and this one will only bore you then get you angry that you wasted a hour a half watching it. Other than Elizabeth Olsen this is trash, simply said.
